In Session Five—Expository Preaching: How To Do It, Pastor Skip Heitzig details instruction from the book of Ecclesiastes 12:9-12 as the scripture says, “The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails-given by one shepherd.” It is a priority as a preacher to pray and study God’s Word, ponder and consider the text of the Bible and listening to the voice of God for directed authority. In order to preach God’s Word accurately and persuasively it is essential for an expositor to prepare a sermon with creativeness and clarity. The expositor should encourage the individual listener to apply God’s saving Scripture to their own life and sanctification.

12:9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs. 10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright–words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. 12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.
